How can Shiela's Sanctuary help me or my loved one?

We carefully place those in need of a safe and sober living environment into homes where they can continue healing and get support through community, peer connection, physical activity (hiking, dance, yoga, etc) and structure.

How Can I help?

We need housing items. If you have good quality furniture, linens or other household items we are accepting donations. And, of course, monetary donations.

How is Shiela's Sanctuary Different?

We are CARR certified as a Level 2 residence. CARR is the Colorado chapter of the National Alliance of Recovery Residences. And we believe in Medically Assisted Treatment (MAT). Meaning, there is allowance for professionally prescribed, non addictive prescriptions. MAT combined with our shared living spaces are supported by the state of Colorado.

In addition, Shiela has real life experience with all the physiological signs of trauma - umbrella'd in the term PTSD (anxiety, insomnia, depression, IBS, headaches, body aches and more). Shiela was diagnosed with Complex Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) AND she successfully healed these physiological symptoms. She knows what works and what doesn't.

Are the houses furnished?

Yes. They are set up so you can walk in and begin living. Down to the pillow case to lay your head.

Do you have a minimum amount required for sobriety?

Yes. You'll need 30+ days of sobriety to qualify. And be attending a regular program for AA or NA - either in an IOP or equivalant such as  A Way Forward or The Recovery Cafe.

When do you do intake?

Monday-Friday 12noon-4pm, by appointment only.

What does somatic mean?

Somatic is relating to the body, especially as distinct from the mind. Most people, even licensed professionals do not understand the affect trauma has on a cellular level. As bestselling trauma research author and renowned trauma psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk MD writes: The Body Keeps the Score. Wounds that trauma has caused are stored throughout the body, not just in the mind. To truly heal, we must address the root of the problem - the traumatic event(s) we have lived and the dis ease we feel. At Shiela's Sanctuary we are adamant that successful healing involves reconnecting with your body and all of our partners support this idea through their programs.

What is a monetary donation used for?

The costs of running a smooth household are only going up. To maintain our standards, we need cleaning and other maintenance items. And anything from utilities to medicine.

We are passionate about educating people on how they can change their behavior; how they can heal their trauma. Through our own lived experience, we’ve found there are many ways to actually heal trauma. We focus on providing education and resources on the most effective therapies available.

Are my donations tax deductible?

Yes. Shiela's Sanctuary is a registered 501(c)(3).  EIN# 92-2074958
